The coronavirus infection rate for the fifth straight day in New York came in below 1% of all COVID tests, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced.

The results of a record 87,900 tests were reported, finding a positive rate of 0.84 percent, or 737 new cases.

"New York State continues to stay vigilant in the face of an ongoing crisis across the country as we pursue a phased reopening," Cuomo said.

"Yesterday we did a record-high number of tests - which is critical to our cautious, data-driven reopening strategy - and we'll keep closely monitoring the numbers we receive daily. In the meantime, New Yorkers shouldn't get complacent—wear masks, stay socially distanced and wash your hands—and local governments must continue to enforce our guidance throughout the state so we don't go back to the hell we experienced just a couple months ago."

There are currently 555 people hospitalized due to the virus and 10 people have died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

Most regions of the state were below a 1% positive rate. New York City and central New York both recorded positive rates of 1 percent.
