Tropical Storm Isaias left hundreds of thousands of New York residents without power. And a week later, thousands are still waiting for their electricity to be restored.
During a press call on Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo called for an investigation into the utility companies responsible for still not providing power to their customers.
"I want the utilities to know that we do not abide by the concept in New York that anything is too big to fail,” Cuomo said. “Your franchise can be revoked. I am not bluffing.”
State Senator David Carlucci introduced legislation on Monday that would require utility companies to reimburse customers for food and medicine spoilage if a power outage lasts 72 hours or more and imposes a $1,000 fine.
"After heavily pressing Con Edison and Orange & Rockland to do the right thing by customers, the power companies have announced they will reimburse customers for food and medicine spoilage following Tropical Storm Isaias," Carlucci said in a statement.
"While this is a step in the right direction, we need legislation on the books to always require power companies reimburse customers following lengthy power outages. This is not a decision that should be made only after public pressure from officials and residents."
