ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Hurricane Milton evacuation orders have forced tens of thousands to flee Florida.

Milton has not only caused traffic jams on the roadways, but also headaches at the airports. Flights in and out of Florida are beginning to see cancellations.

Airports across New York state are preparing for cancellations ahead of Hurricane Milton. Airports in the Tampa Bay area closed Tuesday. The Orlando International Airport plans to close Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Travelers like Jamie Hall are thankful to be out of Florida and out of harm's way. The New York native moved to Bradenton, Florida last year. It's an hour south of Tampa. As Hurricane Milton started to intensify, Hall knew he had to get his family out.

"It’s one of the biggest hurricanes Bradenton has ever seen," Hall said. "So, we’re happy and fortunate to get out. I booked things ahead of time. I had a feeling it was going to be really bad. So thank God I did."

Millions of people across Florida are being urged to evacuate as forecasters warn of the possible impact Milton could have on the Tampa Bay region. Schools across the state are also closing.

That’s what brought student Nora Vandermide back to New York to ride out the storm for the week.

“We got the call [that] school was canceled, and all my teammates are trying to book flights out," Vandermide said. "It was crazy."

Milton could also bring widespread flooding to mainland Florida.

Michael Trippany lives near Orlando and says even though they’re not directly in the storm’s path, people are worried.

“When I was in line waiting to leave Orlando there was a lot of people trying to jump on flights," said Trippany. "People were just showing up at the airport trying to get out."

Airports in Miami and Jacksonville do plan to remain open and encourage travelers to check with the airline before their flight.
