Former New York state Sen. James Seward has died.
Duncan S. Davie, the former chief of staff to Seward, says he died Saturday amid a battle with cancer.
The 72-year-old was from Otsego County and was a graduate of the Oneonta public school system.
He spent more than 30 years as a state senator after he was first elected in 1986. Seward represented the 50th and 51st Districts, which included all or parts of Schoharie, Greene, Otsego, Delaware, Ulster, Herkimer, Tompkins, Chenango, Cortland and Cayuga counties. He retired in 2020.
Otsego County Republican Chair Daniel Koerner released a statement following Seward's death:
"Today, Otsego County lost a legend as we mourn the passing of long-time Senator and esteemed statesman James Seward. His unwavering commitment and dedication during his decades of service in the New York State Senate significantly shaped our community and region. Jim’s leadership, integrity, and tireless efforts left a lasting impact that will be felt for generations. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Cindy and the entire Seward family during this difficult time.
While we are saddened by Jim’s passing, we also celebrate his remarkable contributions and the enduring values he championed. Senator Seward’s memory will always be cherished, and his legacy will continue to guide and inspire us."
Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt also released a statement:
"We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Senator James Seward, an outstanding public servant I was proud to call a friend, a colleague, and a mentor.
We will remember Senator Seward for being an outstanding voice for Upstate, and always ensuring his district was well represented. We thank him for his many years of service to them, and our state.
Please join me and our Republican conference in our prayers and support for the Seward family during this difficult time."
