The closure of Newburgh’s Social Security office and its relocation to Wallkill is drawing a lot of criticism from elected officials and Hudson Valley residents.

Rep. Pat Ryan and state Sen. Rob Rolison slammed the Social Security Administration in a letter, saying, in part, that the SSA did not provide sufficient public information about the closure. Both officials are demanding increased services for Orange County families. County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan said the county needs a Social Security hub in Newburgh because there isn't sufficient public transportation from Newburgh to Wallkill.

“Having that office here locally really allows for individuals to be able to go walk there, be able to access these services," he said. "And that's why it's so important...we see these satellite offices that open up.”
