Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced that flags at all New York state buildings will fly at half-staff in honor of Corey Comperatore on July 19.
Comperatore, a former fire chief who was shot and killed at Donald Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, spent his final moments protecting his family from gunfire in the attempted assassination of the former president.
“Corey Comperatore was a father, a public servant, and a proud American whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence that shakes at the core of our democracy,” Hochul said in a statement. “As we honor his memory, let us commit once more to the better angels of our nature, and to the collective freedoms we enjoy as a nation.”
Comperatore is survived by his wife Helen and two daughters.
