West Genesee baseball is a family.
“We're one group," senior Talon Elkins said. "So when someone's down there, another one's picking them up and everyone's together. So everyone's there for one another.”
What You Need To Know
- West Genesee baseball is enjoying a season nearly 50 years in the making
- The Wildcats last won a Section III title in 1977, but that drought ended this past weekend
- There is still work to be done in the NYSPHSAA Tournament as they chance another championship
It's a group that has fought adversity all season.
“We've dealt with some injuries and battles, some tough losses, games we should have won, and there's been games that we've battled all the way through and won," Elkins said. "So it's been a great season so far, and we came out on top. And we're still going.”
The Wildcats are now just one of six teams left in the state playing baseball. For them, it's a season 47 years in the making, with a near-five decade drought – from 1977 to 2024 – between Sectional Titles ending this past weekend.
“I didn't know how to react when it first happened, or what to do," Elkins said. "You know, the team was just sprinting out onto the field, celebrating, diving on each other. So, I mean, we were all just excited, and it was just that quick moment that was just amazing for all of us.”
“That was my third sectional final and losing as a freshman and sophomore year, then losing first round to a really good team, and just finally winning with this just this team meant a lot,” senior Jacob Severson added.
The Wildcats were close in seasons' past, but the burden of long title dry spell is finally over.
“Unfairly, they have always had that title when we've gone into the finals, that it's been 35 years or 40 years or 45 years, and they had nothing to do with that," head coach Kevin Krause said. "So to get that off of their backs, just off their shoulders. I think is great. And they'll help us going forward in the future.”
Titles like this, long in the making, can have a funny impact on a community. The Wildcats receiving an outpouring of support from their fellow students and alums, showing they’re helping to bring pride to the town of Camilius. It was evident in an email head coach Kevin Krause received from a past player, even from that 1977 squad.
“To have people from that team still following us and seeing how we're doing and everything, it just shows how much this program means to everyone, and how much like everyone cares about our team," Elkins said. "So hopefully in years down, this team still checks up on West Genesee and just sees how they're doing.”
“For all those guys, too, that have played before, I've heard from so many of them and I always respond with them this is for all of us," Krause added. "This was the team that did it, but they did it for everybody.”
As sweet as it is, the road is not finished. The New York State Tournament looms this weekend, and a date with Bethlehem is on tap with the goal of a championship still on their minds.
“Sectionals to begin with was amazing, but states, I mean, that would just be the perfect," Elkins said. "Like, nothing would be better than that. So, I mean, that would just bring everything together.”
