On April 14, the city of Syracuse lost two police officers in the line of duty: Lt. Michael Hoosock from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and Officer Michael Jensen from the Syracuse Police Department.

For one local business, they are looking at the finer things.

"When I heard this happen locally, my heart was broken for the two families and I wanted to do something," said Alexis Hayden Baron, who helps run her family’s jewelry store, Hayden Jewelers in Liverpool.

Hearing about the tragic loss of the officers hit close to home for her.

"A shooting happened in New York City and my sister’s boyfriend is a NYC police officer. He's actually brand new in the field. So it's a very scary thing having a family member, you know, out there protecting the city and the state that we live in," Baron explained.

She decided to start a fundraiser by creating a bracelet with Agate stone in the officers' honor.

"Agate is for healing protection. So it's definitely something that needs to be healed. And I think it's a great little thing that you can wear and be reminded of everybody who protects us," Baron said.

When she started the fundraiser, she says she didn’t know she would receive so much overwhelming support.

"It's actually really amazing to me that everybody that buys a bracelet has a story. Whether they have a family member that, you know, is in the police academy, troopers academy or different types of you know, sheriff, police and just hearing their stories about how grateful they are that we're doing this," said Baron.

They were able to raise a little over $13,000, which was given to Hoosock’s and Jensen’s families. Since then, they have raised about another $6,000 and Baron says those proceeds will go to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department.

"Just grateful that I do have a platform to be able to give back to a community that has lost so much," Baron said.

The bracelets are still being sold for $30 each.
