Travel can be stressful, especially if the airports travelers fly in and out haven't kept up with the times.
Since 2022, New York state has been working to bring airports into the future, putting $230 million behind projects officials say would take travel here in upstate New York to new heights.
Syracuse Hancock International Airport is one of the places that was awarded funding.
It's receiving $20 million to expand the airport's north concourse and federal inspection station. This will provide more seating and concession areas, while allowing the station facility to process 200 passengers per hour.
The development is part of the governor’s plan to revitalize airports across the state.
In addition to Syracuse Hancock, eight more airports are receiving funding, including Albany International, Greater Binghamton, Watertown International, Saratoga County, Sullivan County, Ogdensburg International, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International and Adirondack Regional airports.
“And what it really is is an investment in airports, because we know that they’re economic drivers for the community," said Marie-Therese Dominguez, commissioner of the New York state Department of Transportation. "We’ve got nine airports that are winners, Syracuse being one of the top, $20 million coming here that’s really going to be transformative."
Each airport is undergoing different projects. The main goal for the state is to build a modern transportation experience for travelers.
