In a landmark move, the Biden-Harris administration has directed an unprecedented $303 million in funding to communities across New York through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to enhance housing and services for New Yorkers struggling with homelessness.

Formerly homeless individuals, such as Anthony Cruz, emphasized the critical role of basic necessities. Cruz, now housed and actively contributing to others' well-being, highlights the importance of proper nutrition and support in overcoming homelessness.

"When it comes to food and clean clothing, no matter what position you are in life, these are necessities. And you are definitely self-aware of whether you smell, or appear unkempt from not having proper nutrition," says Cruz.

His story reflects hope amid challenges, emphasizing the transformative impact of the federal grant, which is the largest allocation through HUD's Continuum of Care program to over 7,000 communities in New York.

The program focuses on expanding vital housing and service projects to address the multifaceted needs of the homeless population.

Dave Bach, CEO of Unity House, underscored the significance of the funds for supporting individuals with a history of homelessness, survivors of domestic violence and those with severe mental health needs.

"We focus a lot on people that have a history of homelessness and are also survivors of domestic violence, have severe mental illness and mental health needs, as well as a combination of both," Bach explained.

The funds, primarily designated for permanent housing, offer a low barrier of entry, ensuring broader assistance for those in dire need.

"Having these funds re-upped for this year with some additional funds allows us to meet even more people that are in dire need of housing. And most of these funds are for permanent housing. And with a very low barrier of entry," said Bach.

Unity House, a recipient of the funds, is committed to addressing various needs, including meeting grocery demand. The organization plans to initiate projects that contribute to the overall well-being of the community, such as providing food on a daily basis.

"We're doing what we can to increase the supply, to have variation in the menus. We continue to provide food on a daily basis here for lunch five days a week," added Bach.
