Good news is coming for some New Yorkers looking to move to more stable housing through their Section 8 voucher. Making Moves, a program run by the state’s Homes and Community Renewal office, will now help families in a couple of Hudson Valley counties, in addition to Buffalo, Westchester and Long Island.
One Buffalo resident says the program helped get her into a beautiful home in a great neighborhood.
Stanisha Benjamin said that after living with her mom for eight years, it was time for her and her son to move on to the next chapter.
But getting a Section 8 housing voucher turned out to be the easy part. Finding a place to live was a challenge that she didn’t expect.
“I couldn't find a place," she said. "And then when I did get approved for Section 8, it was still difficult. It seemed to be more difficult because people did not want to take people with Section 8.”
She turned to Making Moves, a state program that provides Section 8 voucher users with resources like housing search assistance and financial counseling.
Enterprise Community Partners is one of the groups facilitating the resources on the local level. Enterprise vice president Baaba Halm said getting families out of high poverty areas brings an array of advantages.
“Housing mobility programs really can lead to physical and mental health improvements, better school achievement for children, a higher lifetime earning potential," Halm said. "So moving to a more resourced neighborhood opens up that optionality for families.”
Making Moves is also on the move, expanding into Dutchess, Orange and Tompkins counties. And it's not stopping there.
“Later this year, we're going to issue a RFP for new program partners, and hope to be able to identify new program partners by the end of the year and be able to expand into an additional two to three more counties," Halm said.
Now in her sixth month at her new place, Benjamin loves everything about it. She’s excited the expansion will be able to get more families into homes like hers.
“It's a great neighborhood. It's very peaceful. It's really nice," she said. "I love it here. The neighbors are really nice and everything.”
