"He really was the godfather of the insult comedy genre. It was certainly a badge of honor to be insulted by Don Rickles," said Journey Gunderson, executive director at the National Comedy Center.

The exhibit showcases Rickles’ 60-plus year career in show business.

“Sarah Silverman pointed out that while the nickname Mister Warmth was sarcastic, the reason his act worked is that there really was warmth behind it. It wouldn't have worked otherwise," said Gunderson.

Rickles’ daughter Mindy agrees, adding there was nobody else like him.

“He was a very loving dad. He never insulted us. And he started something with this insult humor, but it was always done in a way that was kind in his act. He always sang a song, I’m a nice guy, to show the audience that even though he was insulting them, it was done with warmth and a little bit of kidding in it," she said.

Mindy says her dad would love knowing his material is being preserved alongside other comedic icons for new generations of fans.

“He always made a joke, keep my name alive Mindy, so this definitely does that. Just to know that his memory is alive for my kids and their kids to come, and the fans. I mean I’m just so happy for the fans.that they’re able to go and see something like that," said Mindy.

The Comedy Center equally as happy for the family’s help in sharing the collection.

"Whether it's Kelly Carlin, or Melissa Rivers and now Mindy Rickles, the National Comedy Center values the relationship with these estates and families to help figure out how to preserve these legacies and make sure that these names live on for generations to come," said Gunderson.

In addition to the Comedy Center, Mindy says there’s a YouTube Channel called At Don Rickles, featuring some of her dad’s shows.

There’s also a new documentary out that showcases Rickles’ longtime, special friendship with another comedy legend Bob Newhart.

Newhart stated, “Don was my best friend. He was called The Merchant of Venom, but the truth was he was just the kindest man. I know that he would have been quite honored and very proud to have his career collection preserved and displayed at the National Comedy Center.”

Here is what a few other celebrities had to say about the legendary comedian:

Jimmy Kimmel stated, “Not only was Don the funniest man alive, he is the funniest man not alive.”

Jeff Ross stated, “He was America’s doctor. He helped us laugh at ourselves. He brought people together. He brought couples together. He brought races together. That’s incredibly healing. Above all, it was spiritual; not just for the comics but for his fans. Meeting Don was like meeting the Pope. The Pope of humor. He’s the grandmaster, the bald head on Mt. Roastmore, the Black Belt in Busting Balls, The Sultan of Insultin’. I’m so glad Don’s archives will have a safe home to live forever.”

Sarah Silverman stated, “Don Rickles’ act could have never worked if there wasn’t love behind it. It may have been a sarcastic nickname, but he truly was Mr. Warmth.”

John Stamos stated, “Don Rickles was one of my most important, unconventional friends for life. He’s the ultimate equal-opportunity insulter. He goes places very few entertainers dare.  Being a student of comedy, especially stand-up, I’ve spent many hours trying to crack the code of his particular kind of subversive genius. Don deserves to have his archive collection preserved and the National Comedy Center can’t use the word Comedy without Don.”
