When the state committed $300 million for a downtown hospital in Utica, community leaders jumped on it.
Some were hoping the money could be used to upgrade two existing hospitals, but in the end, the project moved forward, and the new hospital is set to open at the end of this month.
“It’s great that Oneida County and the city of Utica has a new hospital. It’s the first hospital to be constructed in New York state in the last 30 years-plus, is my understanding," said Oneida County Public Health Director Daniel Gilmore.
The hope is the 702,000-square-foot facility will draw in young doctors.
