The Syracuse men's basketball team will travel to Honolulu in November to play the 2023 Maui Invitational, an annual tournament that was moved from its traditional location in the Lahaina Civic Center, which is now being used for wildfire recovery efforts in Maui, organizers said Friday.

The 2023 tournament will be played Nov. 20-22 in the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Participating are several nationally top-rated teams: Tennessee, Purdue, Gonzaga, Kansas, Chaminade, UCLA, Marquette and Syracuse.

The tournament will return to Maui in 2024.

“While we have to move this year’s Tournament off of Maui, we are determined to celebrate and honor the culture and traditions that make this event so special,” said Tom Valdiserri, executive vice president of KemperSports LIVE, operator of the Maui Invitational.

Tickets purchased for the 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center will be honored in similar seats in the Stan Sheriff Center, which has 10,300 seats.

A Hoops for ‘Ohana online auction launched last week with Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. All proceeds go directly to wildfire relief and recovery efforts.

“We are disappointed that we could not make the Lahaina Civic Center available for the Maui Invitational this year, but we are thankful the Tournament is staying in Hawai‘i,” says Richard Bissen, mayor of Maui. “We appreciate everything the Maui Invitational is doing to help Maui and its residents."
