The Office of the New York State Comptroller will be attending several statewide events this month to help people search for unclaimed funds.

The comptroller's office says lost money can originate from sources like old bank accounts and uncashed checks.

Assistance, such as free one-on-one sessions, will be available at the following events:

  • Black Arts & Cultural Festival in Albany, Aug. 4, 5-8 p.m.
  • Liberty Farmer’s Market in Liberty, Aug. 8, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Erie County Fair in Hamburg, Aug. 9-20, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Monticello Farmer’s Market in Monticello, Aug. 10, 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, Aug. 22-27, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. (Tuesday-Saturday) and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. (Sunday)
  • The Great New York State Fair in Syracuse, Aug. 23-Sept. 4, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. (Monday-Thursday), 10 a.m.-10 p.m. (Friday-Sunday) and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. (Labor Day)

“My office holds billions in unclaimed funds, and we want to make sure that every New Yorker has the opportunity to access their rightful money," state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said in a statement Wednesday. "Our team is committed to providing the resources and support necessary to help individuals get back their lost money.”

The comptroller’s office says it has returned $268.4 million in lost money so far this year.
