Hit the road this summer and explore what New York has to offer. Not sure where to go?

Take a road trip to Sackets Harbor.

What You Need To Know

  • Sackets Harbor was founded in 1801 and played a role in the War of 1812

  • Visitors to the village can see the battlefield, shop on Main Street, or eat at one of many local restaurants

  • The village will have a Fourth of July fireworks show at dusk

History is what Sackets Harbor is most known for. Augutus Sacket is responsible for settling the village in 1801, and, not long after, the area played an important role in the War of 1812. Sackets Harbor is where soldiers lived, ships were built, and two battles were fought. Now the Sackets Harbor Battlefield is a state historic site open to visitors. Main Street offers retail stores to bring home a souvenir from your travels. Maybe get a table on the water with a Lake Ontario view for lunch, or stay inside and get a quick sandwich.

“The battlefield’s fantastic and that’s a great place to go for a walk and see a sunset. And really quintessential Sackets," said Scott Kennett, president of the Sackets Harbor Chamber of Commerce

Kennett calls the village a slice of Americana. And if you’ve never been, maybe this is the year to visit. Whether you love military history, or a view of the water.

“There’s lots to see and do, there’s something for everyone here, and [we] would love to have you come in and show you our little village," said Kennett.

Sackets Harbor will hold its Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration on Tuesday after dusk. They recommend bringing a chair or a blanket to enjoy the free show, and everyone is invited.

The Sunday Summer Concert Series is weekly from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. on the battlefield, free and open to the public. A few upcoming acts include 50s and 60s music, Latin American and 80s party music.

Then, on July 15 and 16, the 51st Can-Am International Festival takes place, which celebrates Canada and the United States relationship, with a wine garden, kite festival, vintage baseball and more.
