Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon shared an ambitious vision for the county through “Plan ONondaga” on Tuesday. It touches on increasing recreation opportunities, the need to support local agriculture, building up town centers and more.
“We are planning very thoughtfully to do this in a way that's going to enhance communities and preserve character of neighborhoods, but also the things that we like in the communities, we're going to do more of," McMahon said.
McMahon said one of the key components of the plan is the center-driven development of housing in neighborhoods.
What You Need To Know
- As Onondaga County builds upon big changes in recent years, the county executive is hoping for more growth moving forward
- That means more opportunities for recreation, businesses and housing could be coming
- Plan ONondaga was unveiled Tuesday, outlining these plans
He pointed to the “renaissance” in downtown Syracuse as an example of center-driven development that he said was working and needs to be built upon.
“We need to scale that now as ways that meet the moment in time we're in now to do more housing. And the way to do housing where people are going to want to live in is just like we did in downtown," he said.
McMahon said it’s “achievable” to have 10,000 units of housing online in the next two to three years, something that may prove necessary as Micron hires.
Town of Clay Supervisor Damian Ulatowski said he appreciated the outline from the county executive.
“We’re going to interpret that the way we believe the town of Clay residents deserve to have that growth. And I think more than anything, we kind of want to weave Micron into our local community. And as we do that, it will spread and encompass some of the things that the county executive mentioned in his presentation," Ulatowski said.
The updates to the County Comprehensive Plan are the first in 25 years.
