The last 25 years, Dan Sheehan has built Le Moyne into a premier program in college lacrosse, capturing six national championships since 1998.
“Been a lot of fun, very, really fortunate," he said of his time with Le Moyne. "And I think most of all, you know, the type of student athletes that we get to come through here and just make it a pleasure to come to work every day.”
But it’s these past five years that have been some of the most memorable, sharing incredible moments with his son, Kevin.
What You Need To Know
- For the last two decades, Le Moyne has known success under Dan Sheehan
- But the last five years have been the most memorable with Sheehan having his son, Kevin, by his side
- They have a chance to win another national title in 2023
“I think I'm lucky because, you know, not a lot of kids are able to share the success, you know, with their father and in their father's workplace," Kevin Sheehan said. "So I think that part has been has been awesome. You know, I think it's grown our relationship and I think it's made it stronger. And, you know, that's something I will, I'll carry with these memories with me for a while.”
“The minute he could put a stick in his hand, he was kind of hanging out on the sidelines," Dan Sheehan said. "And again, you know, the family atmosphere up here, it was never an issue to have, you know, one of them or three of them running around on the field after games. Been a great experience as a dad and, you know, having three kids that are playing college lacrosse right now, you know, kind of lucky that I get to see one of them, you know, a lot, which is better than having them go someplace else and having limited opportunities to see all three of them.”
The two balance family with the team, and a line is never muddled.
“My best friends have been with me for the past five years," Kevin Sheehan said. "And off the field, you know, they know him as as Kevin's dad and they don't really know him as coach. So I think it's an interesting dynamic. And, you know, like I said, the second we go through this gate here, you know, we know there's a switch and it gets turned on and off pretty easily.”
“I've got, you know, 50 guys that call me coach and one that says, 'Hey, dad,'" Dan Sheehan added. "But yeah, I think, you know, things happen pretty quick on the lacrosse field and there's really, I'm not smart enough to to be able to decipher, you know, 'Hey, that's my kid. And that's my, that's not so.' Plus, when you've been here as long as I am, you know, my wife is probably the first one that acknowledges this.”
The last five seasons have produced great memories, none more so than 2021, when father and son reached the top of the mountain together.
“Growing up and seeing that in the stands and then being on the field and being a major part of that is, is something I'll never forget," Kevin Sheehan said. "We have to look at it one day at a time, you know, because, you know, we're in playoffs here and you know, you got to win to keep going.”
The future for the two remains unwritten after Kevin Sheehan’s playing days come to a close, but that is mostly put on the back burner knowing they have a chance to finish their careers together on top of the lacrosse world.
“And, you know, I think that's a mentality, that we're going to have every day coming out here knowing that it could be your last," Kevin Sheehan said. "And, you know, especially, you know, with my dad, I think it's going to be it's going to be special, you know, hopefully when that happens.”
