When Bryar Hogg steps on the lacrosse field, the University at Albany junior is always looking to pass first.

“Canadians are known for having good stick skills, being able to throw behind the back, around the world, so we would always practice that on the field,” said Hogg, who plays attack.

It’s a game she developed growing up in Oshawa, Ontario, while playing with her old brother and UAlbany senior Graydon Hogg.

“Our whole lives it’s always been dragging the net to the closest field and just shooting around and playing catch all the time. And sticking our hand in it as much as possible,” said Graydon Hogg, who also plays attack for the Great Danes.

Separated by just two years, the sibling rivalry and battles on the field were regularly pretty intense as kids.

“From the get go, we would always crosscheck each other a lot,” Bryar Hogg said.

“She would throw on the elbow pads, the helmet and gloves on, and she played box lacrosse too when she was younger, so she definitely has the gritty side and she’s very tough,” Graydon Hogg said.

Those scrimmages over the years elevated both of their games. In 2019, Graydon Hogg joined the Great Danes men’s lacrosse team. While no longer attending the same school, Bryar Hogg was still there cheering for her brother.

“It was his freshman year. I remember he scored three back-to-back goals against Maryland, and I remember watching that on TV. I was just going crazy,” Bryar Hogg said.

But their time apart would not last long. Bryar Hogg would later commit to the Great Danes women’s lacrosse team, and reunite with her brother.

“At first I was like, ‘oh OK, this should be interesting,’” Graydon Hogg said. “But when she got here, it was pretty awesome. Just having someone to connect with all the time, having your loved ones so close to you and just kind of, just always being there for her, and her being there for me. It’s pretty awesome.”

Over the last few years, the pair have developed into prominent attackers for their respective teams. Mostly notably, Graydon says when his sister recorded a hat trick, including an overtime winner her freshman season against New Hampshire.

“I think that was a pretty awesome goal; force feed inside, and she caught it falling and scored,” Graydon Hogg said. “So at Albany, I think that is the number one right now for sure.”

And the first person to text Bryar Hogg right afterward was Graydon Hogg. The two always exchange messages before and after games. It’s a way to celebrate wins, and lift each other up after losses.

“I love hearing him and seeing him everywhere I go. I’m so incredibly proud of him,” Bryar Hogg said. “He has accomplished so much like more than I can ever expect from myself. And he’s beyond amazing on and off the field.”

“I look up to her. I really do,” Graydon Hogg said. “She has been through a lot in her life, and through knee injuries and different things like that, and she’s pretty special. So to hear her say great things about me and just kind of keep me going, it definitely helps a lot. I try to do the same for her.”
