The Vera House in Syracuse has had better days following a controversial hire and a leadership member stepping down. But the nonprofit is still working to stop sexual and domestic violence.
“We're a survivor, and so we understand that we have work to do, but we are committed. Our staff is there ready and willing to support anyone who needs it," said Vera House Foundation Board Chair Sarah Fitzgerald.

As the Vera House works to restore and improve community relations, they're holding their 29th Annual White Ribbon Campaign. The campaign is a global effort to end violence against women and girls, and promote healthy relationships.
While it is a movement of men and boys, females are encouraged to be involved too.
“Every single person can make a difference and be able to contribute or participate in some way to just build awareness for trying to end the cycle of abuse in our community," Fitzgerald said.
Bishop Grimes’ students have already stepped up, raising hundreds of dollars for the cause.
Fitzgerald hopes others do, too.
This year, folks can donate and participate in a virtual walk.
“It's a lot more accessible to some extent for any individual. If you want to get on a treadmill, if you just want to walk around your neighborhood and you know, it would be great to see different teams of colleagues, family members, friends, recording their results and be able to contribute that way," Fitzgerald said.
The campaign will run through March 31.
If you’re in a domestic violence situation, help is available. Local organizations like the Vera House can help, but for those in other areas, the national domestic violence hotline is (800) 799–7233.
