Scott Farnett has been involved with Syracuse Habitat for Humanity for more than a decade, starting as a volunteer and in the last few years, becoming board of directors president.

He’s happy to be involved as the organization starts a new chapter.

“Just a fulfilling experience when you can actually put a hammer and nail to something and see an end result that's going to change somebody's life forever,” Farnett said.

He's not alone in that passion.

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in different ways over the decades. Through their Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, they’ve advocated and raised funds for the organization and provided a lot of physical labor too.

“They're swinging hammers, even at his age, he was out there at either 94 or 96. He was out there swinging the hammer. They have a huge event in Atlanta, Georgia, because that's one of the major areas that he was involved with. They used to do these build blitzes, where they would build like 20, 30 houses or more all in a short period of time,” said Farnett.

Farnett said Carter propelled Habitat into the spotlight and even now, continues to put Habitat in the spotlight.

“He's definitely leaving a legacy. When the time comes that people will remember, you hope that they are able to emulate someone of that stature,” said Farnett.

Farnett said Habitat for Humanity can use volunteers and donations, and perhaps another high-profile public leader, to help bring attention to the work they do.

According to Habitat for Humanity’s website, the Carters have served the organization as dedicated volunteers for more than 35 years.
