The funeral service for 14-year-old Ava Wood was held Saturday morning at Word of Life Assembly of God Church in Baldwinsville.
She was found shot to death on Jan. 20. Her father, identified as Christopher Wood, 51, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in another room.
Wood was a ninth grader at Durgee Jr. High School in Baldwinsville but also a student-athlete. Last Sunday, a memorial service was held for her. Her soccer coaches spoke about the person and player she was.
Coach Corey Fonseca said she was an incredible kid and everybody needs somebody like Ava.
"She worked super hard,” Fonseca said. “She tried to get better every day. She was 14, she had ups and downs as a player, right? She was an amazing presence. You know, her personality was irreplaceable and she was just one of those kids. You got to have a few Avas."
Fonseca says he and the team will try to remember her in every way possible and shine light on the happy moments with Ava during such a tragic time.
