A Baldwinsville Central School District student and her father were found Friday shot and killed in an apparent murder-suicide, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
Baldwinsville school officials identified the student as Ava Wood, a 14-year-old ninth grade student at Durgee Jr. High School.
The sheriff’s office said the girl was found shot to death Friday morning. The father, identified as Christopher Wood, 51, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in another room. The call for a status check came from Ava Wood's mother, who is estranged from her husband, around 8:30 a.m., police said.
Ava was described Friday by people who knew her as a “lovely-child.” They say she was an honor roll student and a soccer player.
Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck said police have met with members of the Baldwinsville School District. The district said in an email to parents that they are providing crisis counseling staff to assist students as they mourn Ava’s death.
