The Utica Zoo is showing off a new baby zebra.
The Zebra foal, named Zara, was born in late July.
Up until last Friday, she was enjoying close bonding time with her mother in an undisturbed area of the zoo.
What You Need To Know

- The foal is about 3 months old
- The Utica Zoo is open to visitors 363 days a year
Zara and her mother, Zecora, are Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras, an endangered species.
Zecora became pregnant with Zara at another zoo prior to coming to Utica. Zoo staff said Zara is happy and healthy, and they’re excited for visitors to come and see her.
“We have not had a baby zebra here, so it’s a great opportunity for us, and actually, in the background, I’m hearing lions roaring," Utica Zoo Executive Director Andria Heath said. "To be in the middle of the city of Utica, we call ourselves an urban forest. It’s very unique for a city our size to have a zoo, and then to be able to have a baby zebra born is just really fantastic."
There is a male zebra at the zoo, but staff are waiting for Zara to get bigger before bringing him into the same exhibit.
Utica Zoo staff are also planning to bring otters to the zoo early next year, and have lots of events and big projects in the works.
