Whether you’re a fan of creepy things, autumn things, or Stranger Things, City of Oneida neighbors have the lawns to see.
“This is actually the same webbing that they use in the Upside Down in Stranger Things. The only difference is they use a lot less of it but they add slime to it to make it feel more webby," said Oneida resident Jasson Obomsawin of his lawn decorations.
Obomsawin and his son are big fans of the Netflix show, Stranger Things.
It’s fun for them to decorate but there is also an incentive in Oneida, thanks to the Rossi’s. We met the Oneida couple in 2020 to talk about their Facebook group, "Oneida for Change," intended to unite the city, and give people things to do.
“Almost has 4,000 followers. It’s kind of become like the unofficial community page," said Nicole Rossi.
The Rossi’s continue to host community events and bring locals together – one way is with their annual Halloween light competitions.
“It’s really grown as you can see with the displays," Nicole said. "It’s kind of gone to the next level which is awesome.”
Students at elementary schools, (students are selected at random from a coloring contest), get to ride on a bus with their families and judge the houses, a job the kids take very seriously.
“It’s kind of funny because the kids do definitely have opinions and they do judge different houses differently versus kind of what we would do which is why we have them judge because who better to judge than our kids?" said Nicole.
This year, the Oneida Parks and Recreation Department and Oneida Public Library are also helping make the event possible. October 29 is the deadline to enter. The Oneida for Change Facebook group has more information.
