A petition being filed by former Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler and his "Renew I-81 for All group" looks to stop the community grid project from happening in its current form.
The Onondaga County Supreme Court filing names the state Department of Transportation and three of its highest ranking officials.
That community grid project is one of the largest in state DOT history and looks to completely rework how Interstate 81 goes through and around Syracuse and surrounding area.
This petition, which also is being filed by current Onondaga County Legislator Charles Garland and the towns of DeWitt, Tully and Salina, largely focuses on the lack of review of viable alternatives with less environmental and traffic impacts.
It looks to toss out New York's state environmental quality review and environmental impact statement saying they were deficient.
It also alleges the project would violate part of the green amendment of the New York state constitution.
Spectrum News 1 has reached out to the state DOT for comment and have not heard back.
A spokesperson for the city of Syracuse says they have no comment at this time.
