A Utica man has died following an altercation with Utica police officers, according to a release from the Utica Police Department Tuesday.
Officials said the incident occured on Monday, when officers responded to a call about an emotionally disturbed person "armed with weapons" on Neilson Street.
The officers are said to have found a man outside the home who was armed with a knife, resulting in "a use of force incident" in which the man, who has been identified by the department as 61-year-old David Litts, was shot.
According to the release, Litts was sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital where he later was pronounced dead.
The Utica Police Department responded to the incident in Tuesday's release, saying in part, "We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of David Litts."
The case will be transfered to the New York attorney general for review, under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, for investigation. The Utica Police Department will also conduct its own administrative investigation, according to the release.
Both investigations are active and ongoing.
