Bus garages are beginning to implement transportation plans for thousands of students. Beginning today, the Baldwinsville Central School District opens for the new year. District officials said they have about 90 bus routes planned to pick up students for school.
They've been working diligently to prepare for this new school year. Transportation Director Mike Tierney says that every bus route from last school year was evaluated and re-adjusted if necessary. The new center at the district has a fleet of 120 buses. Mechanics have been making sure every vehicle is safe and ready to transport more than 5,000 registered students.
The district has been taking phone calls from parents who have questions and concerns. The transportation director said he's optimistic things will run smoothly but hopes parents will exercise some patience.
"On the opening days of school, the first three days of school, we ask parents to be very patient with our school bus drivers and school bus attendants. They are learning the new routes as well as well as all the new faces of students. Most of our drivers are on completely new routes this year," said Tierney.
Tierney said bus drivers have been going over their routes and have even gone on some practice runs to make sure they're ready for the first few days.
He said the district was able to fill quite a few open bus driver positions over the summer and get some new drivers trained.
