Baldwinsville boy's lacrosse practices like the top team in Section 3, and they’re having fun too.
“It’s been an absolute blast playing with the boys that we’ve been playing with since kindergarten, first grade, and being successful is always fun,” senior captain Trey Ordway said.
Success and Baldwinsville lacrosse are nearly synonymous.
The Bees are the reigning Class A Section 3 champions, and also won it all in 2019. They’re on track again in 2022, ranked fourth in the state, but also coming in at 21 in USA Lacrosse Magazines top 25 nationally.
What You Need To Know
- Sectional lacrosse play gets underway for many teams in Central New York this weekend
- Baldwinsville won't play until next week, but they're gearing up for another title run
- The Bees are taking things one day at a time and aren't letting outside noise get in their way
“It’s great for the community. It’s great for the town and great for the program,” head coach Matt Wilcox said.
But to the Bees, it's just outside noise.
“The rankings always give people publicity, but getting that year written up in the banner is much more memorable,” Ordway said.
“The rankings are cool, but that’s not what we’re focused on," senior captain Tucker Macknik added. "We’re taking things one day at a time. Next opponent, just doing what we know best.”
What they do best is soak up every bit of coaching they can get.
“Our goal is that sectional 'ship," Ordway said. "We’re going one game at a time, and we want to be remembered by one of those banners hanging up in the gym.”
The trip to the top won’t be easy.
Class A is loaded with teams that can win on any night. So throw whatever happened in the regular season out the window.
“Don’t look behind you. Look at what’s ahead," Wilcox said. "We know it’s a very, very competitive Class A league. It’ll be a very, very competitive sectionals, so we’re just trying to get better every single day so we play our best lacrosse come sectional time.”
The journey can be just as good as the final destination.
“Take in every game and every practice at a time," Macknik said. "I feel like we’ve done that. Everyone has had a great time, and I wouldn’t trade it at all.”
