The state department of health said Monday that it is investigating a case of acute pediatric hepatitis on Maui.
“DOH is investigating a report of acute pediatric hepatitis of unknown origin in a Maui resident under 10 years of age,” said acting DOH communications director Katie Arita-Chang in an emailed statement to Spectrum News Hawaii.
“The child was hospitalized for several days with abdominal pain and fever at the end of April. An extensive medical investigation was performed and there are a number of laboratory test results outstanding. At this time, no cause has been determined. DOH is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the cause of the hepatitis case.”
The case comes on the heels of the CDC issuing an advisory about an outbreak of hepatitis among children and the announcement that it is investigating 109 such cases in various states on the mainland.
