Syracuse police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and four others injured that happened just after midnight in Armory Square.
Officers responded near the 300 block of South Clinton Street after several gunshots were heard at 12:13 a.m.
According to police, five people with gunshot wounds were found at the scene, where Akok Lual, 24, was pronounced dead.
One victim remains in critical condition, and the other three have non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The incident is currently under investigation.
"We continue to provide a canvas of the area in attempt to locate witnesses and or evidence," Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said. "[We are] still trying to find the individual or individuals that we believe are responsible for the incident. We’re working very hard to do that."
Buckner says officers have been canvassing Armory Square every weekend. The department created a detail of 11 officers and a sergeant for this effort. Mayor Ben Walsh says the fact responding officers were only about 40 feet away and this still happened, is brazen and senseless.
"On behalf of the Syracuse Police Department, on behalf of the City of Syracuse, this will not be tolerated," Walsh said. "I guarantee you that the individual who pulled the trigger last night will be caught, I guarantee you.
