A 12-year-old boy from Syracuse was arrested, accused of robbing Juli Boeheim, the wife of Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim, outside of Destiny USA last week, police said on Tuesday.

It was one of several recent incidents at the mall, including a shooting inside over the weekend. Syracuse leaders said they are in communication with mall owner Pyramid Management Group to ensure security concerns are being addressed.

But one person who was at the mall during Saturday's shooting said she’s not sure if she’ll ever return.

"All of the sudden, someone just screamed, 'run,'" recalled Jennifer Gentile, of Syracuse.

It was supposed to be a fun trip to the mall for Gentile and a group of friends last Saturday.

Until it wasn’t.

“We literally ran, the whole group of us — we had children — into a store room where we were told on the overhead to shelter in place," Gentile said.

Syracuse Police now say a shot had just been fired downstairs in the mall, sending droves of shoppers sprinting toward the exits.

“One of the children said to me, 'am I going to die?'" Gentile said.

Saturday's incident was just the latest in a string of violence at the mall, and Syracuse Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens stressed that while the mall is responsible for its own security, the city wants to see changes.

“What I’m concerned about is that while they’re operating, that the businesses are able to operate, people are frequenting the mall and everyone knows they are going to a safe environment,” Owens said.

She said the city will be meeting with the mall’s operators and the Syracuse Police Department next week to discuss how to make the facility safer.

“As you know, there are S.P.D. people who are in there now. If you go to the mall, you see us in there, but we need to talk about what we need to do, and that’s what we’re going to do moving forward,” she said.

Gentile said she is going to need to see some significant changes before she would be willing to return.

“That was such a frightening situation that I would have to have proof that things had improved, almost 100%, before I would put myself or another child in harm's way,” she said.
