While some viewed the Martin Luther King Jr. Day snowstorm as a nuisance, others considered the weather and its timing a call to service.

As the civil rights leader's famous remarks played on a cell phone, David West and his son, David West Jr., honored their hero the only one they could on what was a wintery federal holiday.

“We’re just going to clear it out, so if anyone wants to come over and have a little fun,” David West Sr. said.

“If anyone still got a heart like we do, they’ll still come up,” David West Jr. chimed in. “People might want to take some pictures.”

An annual march from the Empire State Plaza in Albany to the memorial in Albany's Lincoln Park commemorating King was canceled this year due to weather.

“Since I was 14. I’m still here. I’m 35 now,” said David West Jr. “It’s a family thing we do every year.”

The Wests say clearing out the snow that fell was the least they could do.

“The man would’ve done it for us,” David West Sr. said. “He would’ve definitely did it for us.”

They hoped their simple act of gratitude would inspire people to take a moment Monday to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and what he stood for.

“Without him, a lot of people wouldn’t be here,” David West Jr. said. “The speeches. The people that he talked to. He was a heartfelt man.”
