County Executive Ryan McMahon has vetoed a controversial redistricting plan for Onondaga County, according to Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny.

The redrawn voting maps were put in place by the GOP-led majority of the legislature, and as it nearly became law before Monday's veto, the maps had received criticism from Democrats at every turn.

They say the maps were drawn too quickly, and would fundamentally change who represents the county.

A hearing put on by McMahon last week was attended by local NAACP leaders where they voiced frustration with how the redrawn district 16 would make African Americans a minority in what is currently the only Black majority district.
