The Rome Rescue Mission’s slogan is “a hand up, not a hand out.” Executive Director Matt Miller is proud of the programs the mission offers, along with the meals they provide daily, and especially during the holidays.

“We’re already starting to gear up for Thanksgiving. We have an awful lot of meals to prepare, and so we’re getting it going right now,” said Miller.

Staff and volunteers will have their hand full this year as the mission is able to provide mobile meals, as well as have the dining room open again this year.

“We’re really excited to be able to get back into the grind of things that we would normally do,” Miller said.

Miller said they’re set on staff and volunteers, but need turkeys. He said they have about 400-500 right now, but need 2,000. He said the food goes further than just satisfying appetites.

“It’s not always about the food,” he said. “There’s a need for the food in the household, but there’s also other needs. We have conversations with people, asking them what their needs are; How can we help you to be independent?”

Miller said the best way to give is to visit the mission and drop off a turkey or monetary donation.

The mission also needs gravy and stuffing. Click here to learn more about what the Rescue Mission is doing this year for the holidays or the programs they offer.
