Just a little more than one week after partially opening, concerns are being raised about staffing at New York's northern border.

U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins is pushing for adequate funding to support staffing levels.

"The FY22 Homeland Security Appropriations bill must address these ongoing revenue shortfalls," Higgins said. "Until U.S. - Canada border operations normalize, I expect these revenue shortfalls to persist. In addition, this bill is an opportunity to ensure land ports of entry have adequate staffing and robust funding for border infrastructure which will make international travel and commerce more efficient and more secure. I wholly support a funding bill which makes these necessary and forward-thinking investments."

Last year, Congress approved $840 million in emergency funding to fill gaps caused by the border closure, specifically a decrease in customs fees collected. That has not yet been renewed for the 2022 fiscal year, which begins in October.

Currently, the Canadian border is open for vaccinated Americans, though they can’t return to the state as the U.S. side is closed to non-essential travel.
