Activists are urging the DeWitt Police to hold accountable two officers seen on video using force against two women inside an East Syracuse Walmart.

The video of a July 4 incident at the East Syracuse Walmart is part of a 15-minute video released by the Dewitt Police Department. It shows Officers Corey Buyck and Rory Spain in an altercation with two women. Buyck was seen swinging a woman to the ground, and Spain was shown punching another woman after it appears she attempted to bite him.

Spain has been placed on paid administrative leave as the department investigates the incident, officials said.

Police have charged Tajenik Byrd and Tyreana Edmonds in the incident.

Members of RebirthSYR demonstrated outside of the police department Friday.

RebirthSYR co-founder Hasahn Bloodworth says the family of both women and the group will next meet with lawyers to discuss next steps.

"Say if that cop was off duty and he did that, he would be going to jail. So we're saying that police are above the law and that's not fair," Bloodworth said. "Police are not above the law."

Police have said the video was released as an attempt to be as transparent as possible.

"Conclusions about the actions of the officers are in line with the department's policies and law will not be made until all the facts are known and the investigation is complete," Dewitt Police Lt. Jerry Pace said.

Dewitt police say around 4:55 p.m. on July 4 officers were dispatched after a report of five to six people fighting in the store, with employees being threatened and pepper spray being used on people, including children.

Pace says part of the video shows the use of pepper spray from one of the two women later arrested.
