A community vigil will take place Saturday for the victims of the double homicide in Watertown, who were recalled Thursday as well-known contributors to the area.

Maxine Quigg, 50, and Terry O'Brien, 53, were shot and killed Wednesday at the office of Bridgeview Real Estate Services, a business they owned for about 10 years.

Police identified the shooter as 55-year-old Barry Stewart, an employee who worked at Bridgeview until about three weeks ago.

Investigators say surveillance footage shows Stewart pulling up to the office, going inside, and then leaving all within about one minute.

They say one other person in the office was not injured.

Police say Stewart died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after authorities tried to pull over a vehicle he was driving in Franklin County.

Watertown Mayor Jeff Smith says the victims were an important part of both the community and his life. He says Quigg and O'Brien went into business together about a decade ago.

Quigg was a member of the boards for the Northern New York Community Foundation and the Flower Memorial Library.

O'Brien spent 25 years in law enforcement and coached lacrosse at Jefferson Community College. The mayor says he knew O'Brien since grade school, and even lived with him for a few years.

"And they've touched so many, so many lives," Smith said. "Mine is just a microcosm story of it, of other friends that they have touched and they have given back, served and helped out."

A community vigil for Quigg and O'Brien will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday near the fountain in Public Square.
