The city of Syracuse's ShotSpotter program, discontinued in January due to a $6 million budget cut from the Syracuse police department, will be reinstated, according to a statement from Syracuse First Deputy Police Chief Joe Cecile.
"With confirmation of American Rescue Plan funding to the City of Syracuse last month, Mayor Walsh requested ShotSpotter be reinstated in the Syracuse Police Department budget. The department began the process of restarting the service on Monday. The ShotSpotter service provider expects to have the system fully operational next week. Mayor Walsh has also asked Chief Buckner to explore expanding ShotSpotter in the coming year," said Cecile on Wednesday.
From 2014-17, more than 600 shots fired calls were reported to 911. With the ShotSpotter technology active from 2017-20, that number grew to more than 1,400.
