Three children were shot in Syracuse on Sunday evening, one fatally.

The children were shot along the 300 block of Grant Avenue in the city of Syracuse just before 7 p.m. Sunday, according to Chief of Syracuse Police Kenton Buckner. According to Deputy Chief Derek P. McGork at a press conference Monday morning, police arrived on the scene at 6:51 p.m. on reports of a vehicle shot at and found three young girls — an 11-month-old, 3-year-old and an 8-year-old — injured.

All three children were transported to Upstate Medical Hospital for treatment where the 11-month-old died.

McGork said the victims' vehicle was occupied by two adult females and their three children traveling eastbound on the 100 block of Lincoln Avenue when a suspect vehicle approaching westbound shot at them.

Buckner says the other two children who were injured are currently in stable condition and are expected to survive. While the investigation is active and ongoing, Buckner urged the community to step up and help them find those responsible.

"Individuals like this should not have any shelter in this community," said Buckner. "We need information and for people to come forward. These were babies in the back seat of this car, so we certainly need the public to do their part in this."

Mayor Ben Walsh also attended the press conference. He made an emotional speech in which he declared the act "senseless" and "incomprehensible."

"This is a nightmare. An unimaginable tragedy. All my thoughts are with the family, with the 11-month-old whose life was stolen, with the two other children who are recovering from their injuries and with all the others that are mourning," said Walsh.

Buckner says that at this time, the department will not be releasing the names of the victims and there is no motive or suspect information yet. Both detectives and city officials are shaken.

"We can all relate to this," said Walsh. "All of us up here have daughters. This hits home in a very real way. Again, something is broken in our society."

"Regardless of whether they intended to hit the kids or not, there's a baby that's dead and we want to hold the individuals who are responsible for that accountable for that," said Buckner.

Founder of OG's Against Violence, Clifford Ryan, agrees that accountability is needed.

"Right now, this entire city is going through a lot of hurt and pain because of this tragic situation," said Ryan.

Ryan said whoever is responsible needs to come forward as soon as possible for another reason — to help prevent future acts of violence.

"I want to believe in my heart that you possibly didn't mean to do this. You need to turn yourself in, OK? To save this city a lot of more bloodshed." he said.

Ryan said he'll be supporting the family members of the victims, and urges the city to come together.

"We just had another child shot and killed, so it's very important that we stand up as a community, come together," he said. "The city must get behind us so that we can all help strengthen our city."

Candles are placed on Lincoln Avenue, where police say the mother stopped the vehicle, realizing the children had been shot.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Syracuse Police at (315) 442-5222.
