Broome County has found a place to vaccinate hundreds of people a day. Leaders have chosen the Ice Center at SUNY Broome and expect it to be up and running next week.

It will complement the other site set up by the state at Binghamton University. The one at SUNY Broome will be able to give out 500 doses a day if they have the supply.

The president of the college says it's a perfect partnership, because the rink already has an HVAC system in place so that air flow is similar to the outside.

"Honestly, it's been sad to see our beautiful ice center sit dormant all this time," said Kevin Drumm, SUNY Broome Community College president. "A big investment there. So now it will be used for the best purpose one could think for such a facility: to help save the lives of our residents by helping put a roof over the heads of everyone getting a vaccine."

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar is asking people not to call the county health department to set up a vaccine appointment. That needs to be done online, and spots are filling quickly.

Garnar says if you have questions, you should call the state COVID-19 hotline. The county is also now requiring appointments at its rapid testing site at Recreation Park through the end of the week.

Walk-ins are being turned away because there are not enough tests. That testing site will eventually move to the Oakdale Mall parking lot for two weeks.
