About five years ago, six world championship belts were stolen from the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota. Four belonged to Carmen Basilio, and two to Tony Zale. Zale's niece is one of the people fighting to get the belts back.

"It just was unbelievable, because they had been here for 17 years," said Haley Zale, the niece of Tony Zale, "The Man of Steel."

Two of her uncle's most prized possessions were his world championship belts. Her family has since removed some of his other artifacts from the museum.

Basilio's story lives on at the museum, too, but also without his world championship belts.

"Carmen was very important to all of us, and of course when his belts were stolen, it really hit us in the heart, but Carmen's spirit and everything that we know of Carmen and fought for has not wavered in any bit," said International Boxing Hall of Fame Executive Director Ed Brophy.

Zale says it's important for the belts to come back and justice to be served.

"All of those accomplishments that he had in the ring are so personal to him and to our family because of what it did. It got us out of the ghetto of Gary, Indiana and into more opportunities in life," she said.

Zale has taken her mission to find the belts around the world. She posts videos on social media to raise awareness of the theft.

"Throughout the process, the police have been asking for tips, and it's my opinion that you can't get tips unless people know that they're missing," she said.

The Canastota Police Chief says updates on the investigation will be coming, but details have not been made public yet.
