First responders save lives all the time, but not usually the life of one of their own. Now four law enforcement members in the Southern Tier are being recognized for just that.

They were each given the New York State Liberty Award Medal Thursday, which is the highest honor awarded by the New York State Senate.

Last year, Binghamton Police Officer Brad Kaczynski was stung by a bee during a training exercise and had a severe allergic reaction.

He went into shock and another officer had to start doing CPR while the rest rushed to get him emergency care.

"Especially when it's a friend and a brother, when we could tell that his health started going downhill is when we all just decided to act and react," said David Schoonover of the Tioga County Sheriff's Office.

"It doesn't surprise me, that's what they do. They help people. I just can't thank them enough. I'm here today because of them," said Kaczynski.

The officer spent several days in the hospital in serious condition, but was able to make a full recovery.
