ENDICOTT, N.Y. — It's been an eventful couple of years for the former Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome.

In August of 2019, it was shut down, following a pending lawsuit and a loss of revenue.

The Children's Home officially purchased the building in May of this year, as children and their families searched for options.

The woman leading the charge at the new center is Nikki Post.

"It's very important to me that our youth have something; Some place to go, somewhere that is safe, some place that is fun, and some place everyone is welcome," said Post, who is the Southern Tier Community Center director.

The Southern Tier Community Center, as it's called, is now offering a childcare program for school-age children.

Children are also fed throughout the day and even get help with their homework.

But for Post and staff at the center, developing a well-rounded child goes beyond a classroom education.

A weight room room for the community is being remodeled along with a former boxing gym.

"Now it's just a big open space. We have some plans for it by way of fitness," said Post.

And it's not just about the youth, as the basketball gym will soon be spruced up and will even offer sports like pickleball for adults.

"Just a place to hang out and reconnect with people and see people, friends, things like that, just a really nice, safe, clean space for everyone to enjoy," said Post.

While the center isn't fully open just yet, Post said the community can't wait to get back inside.

A grand opening hasn't been finalized.
