NEW YORK, N.Y. - Governor Cuomo said Wednesday in his briefing he’s concerned other states’ uptick in the virus could hinder New York’s progress in recovery efforts.

He pointed to 36 states around the country that have seen a spike in coronavirus numbers and hospitalizations since reopening, blaming the president and other states lawmakers for reopening too soon.

“More people are getting sick and that is undeniable,” he said.

Cuomo said he’s consulting with all stakeholders on guidance on how to reopen city and state schools, rejecting the president’s remarks on pulling federal funding if schools do not reopen.

Cuomo gave a timeline on school reopenings:

“The federal government has no legal authority when it comes to school openings,” he said. “It’s a state decision. If it’s not safe for my child, it’s not safe for your child.”

As Long Island enters Phase Four, Cuomo said he’s cancelling all county fairs.

Coronavirus numbers continue to trend downward for the state, with 841 hospitalizations, 97 intubations - the lowest the state has seen since mid-March, and just 11 lives lost to the virus yesterday.
