Local hospitals, schools and even churches are taking extra precautions to avoid spreading the coronavirus.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse has a protocol similar to what they use during flu season. The Diocese sent out guidelines to its 114 parishes and 22 schools, but the chancellor says the parish leaders can decide how they want to conduct their masses.

They're asking church members to stay home if they're sick and watch mass online or on T.V.

If you attend mass, refrain from shaking hands at the sign of peace. Instead, hold up the peace sign or nod your head.

When it's time for communion, distributors are expected to practice good hygiene and wash their hands. It's best to receive communion in your hand rather than on your tongue, and don't drink from the chalice.

Last but not least, holy water fonts should be cleaned and changed on a regular basis.

"It's really about not being afraid of what's taking place,” said Danielle Cummings, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse chancellor. “Being aware of what the signs and symptoms are, know them within yourselves. To keep yourself from getting ill, do the normal things you would do."

The Chancellor says that includes washing your hands frequently and thoroughly.

They also have hand sanitizers throughout the church.
