The first positive test for novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, comes from a woman in Manhattan, said City Council Speaker Corey Johnson on Sunday. Even with this news, Governor Andrew Cuomo iterated the general risk of catching the virus in New York state "remains low."

The COVID-19 case is of a woman in her late 30s who caught the virus while traveling in Iran, Cuomo said on Sunday. He says the woman is presently isolated in her home with respiratory symptoms, citing she is not in a serious condition.

"[The woman has been] in a controlled situation since arriving [in] New York," Cuomo said in his Sunday statement. "The positive test was confirmed by New York's Wadsworth Lab in Albany, underscoring the importance of the ability for our state to ensure efficient and rapid turnaround, and is exactly why I advocated for the approval from Vice President [Mike] Pence New York was granted just [on Saturday]."

Cuomo says the positive novel case was "expected" and it was always a matter of when the case would occur — stating he called for the passage of a $40 million emergency management authorization for the virus last week.

Cuomo maintains he is "diligently managing" the situation of the virus and will update with information as it becomes available.
