Douglas Lockwood has lived in Vernon Center for around 28 years.

"About second year we were here, we noticed the water condition getting worse," said Vernon Center resident Douglas Lockwood.

This water sample was taken directly from the well, and while it may look clear, it has a distinct salty smell. And the homeowner says that problem has worsened over time.

"We had it checked out, and the salt level was quite high, and since then, it's just continually gotten worse and worse," said Lockwood.

Lockwood is one of several neighbors coping with water quality issues.  New tests have shown some homes have sodium and chloride levels up to 40 times higher than normal and chloride levels up to 21 times higher than normal.

"There's several people in this area that's had this problem,” said Lockwood. “I had to replace all the copper pipe in here, I've had third hot water tank here."

And those aren't the only changes he's had to make in his home.

"You're looking at the third water treatment system I've had in this house. We're up to about $15,000 trying to get this water cleaned up," Lockwood said.

Lockwood says the water has caused corrosion, and ruined appliances.

"I've gone through three sinks, three dishwashers, and my second septic system, the salt ate my septic tank,” said Lockwood. “Not only me, the gentleman across the road, the same deal."
