The Ithaca Police Department is taking a break from its distracted driving diversion class. The class has been offered since 2017.

Drivers that have received a ticket for texting and driving can take the class to avoid points on their license. The class is being temporarily suspended.

Learning the new bail reform laws has taken extra resources from departments.

"So right now it’s on a temporary pause, we just don't have the resources available to continue with it,” said Ithaca Police Senior Deputy Chief Vincent Monticello. “But we're hopeful that we may be able to institute it sometime this year."

The class is typically offered monthly at the Tompkins County Public Library. It has taught almost 100 drivers about the dangers of using a phone behind the wheel.
