It was a safe-haven for children and their parents for nearly 60 years. That's why it came as a surprise back in August, when the Endicott Boys and Girls Club mysteriously shut down.

We would later find out that a lack of funding and a pending lawsuit gave the board no choice but to close.

"There were thousands of people that for the past 50 years that participated in these programs and received programs and the community was pretty shocked," said Jason Garnar, (D) Broome County Executive.

Broome County immediately began leasing the building, hoping to find a more long-term solution.

Four months later, 'The Children's Home' announced its plans to purchase the former club.

"They saw a building that served thousands of people for 50 years and they said look, the need is still there if not even greater and we believe we can come in and purchase this building," said Garnar.

Its initial plan will be to offer after school programs for children in the Maine-Endwell and Union-Endicott school districts.

"The thought of that going away for the people and children especially here in Western Broome County to not have this vital resource was something we wanted to respond to," said George Dermody, Children's Home President, CEO.

The original club offered programs for both children and adults.

In the long-term, the Children's home hopes to develop a "Southern Tier Community Center" that would meet those similar needs.

"A place where people can come and recreate, enjoy these beautiful facilities and also access services and supports to help them live their best life," said Dermody.

The Children's Home serves roughly 500 children and their families every year.
